I too find them confusing - the H member for cvtch has this declaration -

void cvtch ( _SPCPTR, /* Receiver 4-bit hex */
_SPCPTRCN, /* Source 8-bit character@A0C*/
int ); /* Length in bytes of source */

Ah, OK - the thing I sent Gary was to make an 8-byte value out of 16-character hex representation - Oy OY Oy!

Sorry, Gary, to add to the confusion!
