About cvthc() and cvtch(), the length parameters for both functions represent the length of the longer "character" value.

So for converting from x'1234' to '1234', you would pass 4 as the length value to cvthc.

And for converting from '1234' to x'1234', you would pass 4 as the length value to cvtch.

(I find these two functions to be monumentally confusing.)
