OK, so am I reading it right that everything is fine until you use
DBU? Is being able to DBU the data a business requirement? Can you
not inspect/edit the data with other means?

It sounds to me more like a problem with DBU than with the data.
(Either a bug in DBU, or maybe some DBU settings.)
