If it's a one-off, you might just be best off sucking it up, and running it
in off-hours, perhaps in a job (jobs?) with a high TIMESLICE value.

This is almost undoubtedly the simplest solution, though sometimes
even a "one-off" becomes a "few-off" because on the first run, some
things didn't convert quite the way you wanted, and you have to make
adjustments and re-run.

Depending on how old your i is and what other platforms are available
to you, it might be faster to do the conversion/export to something
other than XML on another platform. (For example, our i is so old
(actually it may be a genuine AS/400) that the PC on my desk could
parse the XML much faster, and spit out something easier like a flat
file for the AS/400 to import.)
