Intuitively, that does strike me as the most likely bottleneck.

I can easily agree with that, but I will go a step further and say
that I suspect that a pure-RPG solution is going to be much faster
than a pure-Java solution on the i. (Not crazy-faster like the 60x
Scott is experiencing versus XSSF, but as a wild guess, I'd say around
twice as fast.)
