Can't you save it immediately before the SBMJOB and restore it immediately after? The submitted job makes a copy of it during initialization, right?

Nice idea Mark but sadly although I can trap the point at which the LDA needs to change I have no such common point at which to restore it. I can't risk using the menu structure because command line access is available during the currency of the 5250 app so the other app that "owns" the LDA could theoretically be called.
