I thought simply assigning the value to the variable did the blanking out first - this isn't a MOVE or MOVEL, which are different.

Is workfield a varying-length field? Then all you need to do is this -

workfield = %trimr(Newdata);

HTH - and that I'm right, cuz I hardly ever initialize, then assign anymore!
