When a record is locked by a CHAIN or READ, I know that it will be
unlocked when the program updates that record, or when it reads another
record. But what happens if a READE returns the EOF condition? Is the
previous record released? If a READE is performed on record 1, then a
WRITE is performed, is record 1 released? If so, why? How does it work?

The lock is released, and then the READ or CHAIN is attempted. So
unsuccessful READ/CHAIN results in a "lack of locks" <-- It's too early for
me to think of a better way to say that.

As for the second part, I believe the lock is held through a WRITE, but I'd
also like confirmation of that.
