Can you explain why it's a "huge amount of overhead" to bring in an entire
database record? Maybe I'm missing something, but if you have a procedure
which effectively 'reads' a file, then the database record is already there
- where's the overhead to returning the entire thing (instead of a subset
of the fields)?

Or have I misunderstood you?
