Of course, once I hit send, I ran another search, and found that the JTDS properties are different than the Microsoft ones I was looking at.
So instead of instanceName, I should have simply been using instance.

With that change, I ended up getting the following error:
"Unable to get information from SQL Server: SQLREP1\MSSQL2008R2."

If I'm understanding it correctly, this is because the SQL Browser isn't running. I'm awaiting response from our networking people at this time in regard to turning it on.
