I'm not sure where Varying comes into play on this statement. It would work the same even if XCVAR1 wasn't Varying.
XCVAR1 = 'false' + XCVAR1;

Ok, well yes, if XCVAR1 is Varying then the statement would set the length, which would not occur if it wasn't Varying. What I meant to say is that the left-most value is the same for both Varying and non-Varying.
