Back in 2000 a reasonable choice was available from IBM. It was called Visual Age RPG and was a Windows based GUI, written by the programmer in ordinary RPG with various added opcodes that allowed a regular programmer like me to write true OS/2 and Windows programs that ran on OS/2 and Windows operating systems.

I still have the scars. VARPG worked a charm, but almost no one would go that route.

Here's a sample:

* .................................
* (EXIT pushbutton was pressed)
C PSB0000D BEGACT PRESS FRA0000B
C MOVE *ON *INLR
C ENDACT
* .............................................
* (Initialization of ENTRY box)
C ENT0000E BEGACT CREATE FRA0000B
* fill the display window fields:
C 'ENT0000E' SETATR TODAY 'text'
C MOVE *DATE fieldf 10
C 'ENT0000F' SETATR fieldf 'text'
* .................................................
C ENDACT

Only two programmers? That was a small shop.

Anyway, what would have been the best thing for a RPG and CL AS400
programmer to do back in 2000? Would retraining have been a good idea?
How about now?

Thank you,
Nancy
