Or W3C to finally catch up to dataentry form processing technology that has existed for 30+ years and just build in to standard HTML specs and eliminate the need for thousands of web form developers to do the same javascript over and over and over again

Good analogy, Mike. I suppose you could use that syntax, but you'd
have to write your own JavaScript to properly format the data
(inserting dollar signs and commas), and other types of operations you
might perform on "number", "size", "decimal", and "mask".
