All,
Just to clarify.
I did not know if it mattered what language the driver was written in. I
had seen references to a specific level of java, so that was why I refered
to a language.

Regarding PHP, I had seen references that it could be used to access MS SQL
server, but the client that I am doing the work for does not have the
product and I am not familiar with the product.

The ArdGate product looks interesting, but appears to be overkill for the
project that I am working on. I have just one program that may need to
access the MS SQL server.

I am still looking at options, but am leaning to Scotts' JDBC4 service
program.

It has not been decided by the client if they want me to access the data on
their external server, or if they will somehow place a file on the IBM i
system.

Thanks to everyone that responded.
I have a better understanding of the options available to me if I need to
go in this direction.

PHP is not an option as this will be a batch program.
Has anyone done this using RPG & SQL?

Scott's API is the right way to go, but PHP can be used from batch so
while I wouldn't recommend it here don't rule it out on that basis.
