%check( <comparator>: <string> )

identifies the first position of the character in <string> that is not in
<comparator>. It returns zero if all characters in <string> are in
<comparator>.

It reads like "check that each character in <string> is one of these in the
<comparator>. If not, stop and tell the position of that character."

You're right, John, that's exactly what it's for.
