Chuck is right. (IIRC) For V5R1 the format is:

C/exec sql
C+ SELECT ....
C+ the rest of your statements...
C+ etc
C/end-exec

Free format for SQL did appear for V5R3 as a PTF (is was announced first, I
believe, for V5R4)

The real problem is that the precompiler does not support free
form. As a result, it inserts the SQLDA in the wrong place and
causes all sorts of erroneous errors. I have played with adding
dummy D-specs and C-specs in order to work around this problem.
Sometimes, I have been successful, but many times not. For now,
what I am doing is avoiding embedded SQL with free form until the
precompiler is improved. Latest rumour is V5R3.
