If I understand your question, it is a misunderstanding.

For comparisons, alphameric fields are padded with blanks until they are equal length. In your case, you were comparing x'4040...' against x'4015...' (since x'40' is an EBCDIC blank - at least in USA). In that comparison, '' is not less than x'4015'.

I would have gone with if %len(string) > *Zero, personally.
