Point well taken. It's how our product is designed - this is a product that gives you access to remote databases, not just to Excel. In any case, we take advantage of ODBC or OLEDB for data, and an OLE instance for Excel.

The separate PC? Sure - it's not been a big roadblock for our customers. In most cases, it makes for very easy programming in RPG - and who doesn't have an extra Windows box around somewhere in their shop's server farm?

We start an instance of Excel to do all the
work - it does run on a middleware PC.

Reading the whole thing into memory - wow, that seems
like a big hammer to do a small job.
What do you think the instance of Excel does? You are proposing a
solution that requires a separate PC just to run. Wow, that seems
like quite a bulldozer to do the job of a sledgehammer.
