I think pointers can add some complexity to RPG that might be a little confusing (one of the big design points for Java is that it has no pointers). However, for things like based variables it's critical, and this is a great example. I'm going to try this and I'll post the results when I get a few moments.

Just to add to the mix, I'd also go with the user space approach, in a
common library. I do this a whole bunch and out works great - I didn't do
any fancy SETOBJACC stuff, and it was still blindingly fast.

Joe,

The get pointer to user space API lets you use the data in the space
object as though it were internal data. I think the user index works the
same way, but I haven't needed to use it for so long, I'm not sure
anymore. You resolve the pointer once at program startup, and that's it.
