I can't speak for anyone but where I work. But we do use our iSeries to
run some JSP/Servlet web apps, some External Stored Procedures, some PHP
web apps along with our RPG based ERP package.

I guess my first question is this... have you narrowed down the
bottleneck? Are you allocating enough resources for websphere (assuming
that is what you are using for the servlets)? Websphere can be a DOG! How
many users do you have concurrently using the application that runs on
Websphere (still assuming)??

There are so many factors as to why things could be slow, and I know that
you aren't specifically asking for trouble shooting help, but if you have
enough problems that you are thinking of other options then maybe some
outside help is in order. I know that Infor suggests that you put their
Webtop (web version of BPCS) on a windows server instead of the IBM i due
to Websphere's sluggishness when you get to about 200 concurrent users...

Subject
....other than RPG & DB2

Is anyone using the iSeries for anything other than RPG & DB2 usage.
Meaning, are you using the standard DB2 with RPG(3,4,ILE)/SQL. Or do you
have a different database usage, and/or do you use other languages?

My reason for asking is, we have developed a rather nice web package,
primarily written in html/javascript, using servlets to make JDBC
connections to call stored procedures(RPG). From time to time certain
areas tend to 'be slow' or 'lage' in speed.
Nothing that some proper reviewing could find and fix. Anyway, we are
about to do some hiring, and the higher ups are questioning if we should
start looking at developers with other skill sets, thinking they know
something that RPG-ers can't figure out.
Not wanting to leave the iSeries, but is questioning if there are better
solutions.

So, I was just hoping to open a dialog, to discuss this.

Thanks
David
