MCH1210 on a CHAIN?!? On an externally-described file?!?

On a program that's being called as an IWS web service, we're getting this (the names have been changed to protect the innocent):

Frobozz Webservice Failed for Quotation Ref: FOO102944
java.lang.RuntimeException: Invocation of program failed.
AS400Message (ID: CEE9901 text: Application error. MCH1210
unmonitored by FROBOZZ at statement 0000000222, instruction
X'0000'.):com.ibm.as400.access.AS400Message@1db21db2

The thing that doesn't make sense is that Statement 222 is a CHAIN on an externally-described file.

Anybody have any idea how this could have happened?
