... it is a precompiler in deed. As far as the select * is static SQL, the resolution of * to a list of fields is done in the package at compiletime and the resulting code of select * and select field1, ..., field n is identical. Using select * in dynamic SQL is another topic, in this case * is resolved at runtime.

I don't think this practice has much to do with the pre-compiler,
however - that's just a tool that generates calls to the underlying
APIs. It also generates field names and manages host variables, which
used to be in the global name space, even if in local scope - this is
the nice bit at 6.1
