And it isn't the same thing. A SELECT structure will only execute the first WHEN set that meets the conditions. In Charles' example, he wants to do something is a customer is taxable AND it is one of the customer types. In your example, assuming it doesn't meet the first test, all you care about in the next test is whether or not the customer is taxable, but it could be any customer type (except 'A'). I.e., there is nothing in either code which precludes types E-Z.
