I've written a tool that does that (see David Foxwell's reply) but there are some things you may not be considering:

1) The computer doesn't know the difference between the network/internet being down and the user's domain not existing. So if your internet connection as a hiccup, a valid address might come back as "invalid."

2) There's very little standardization in the way of e-mail addresses. You can pretty much put anything you like before the @ symbol.

3) Due to the all of the spammers trying to find out what everyone's e-mail addresses are, there's no way to truly validate an e-mail address. You can validate a domain (but see #1, above) but not the actual address. All e-mail providers treat e-mail addresses as "secrets."

So for the most part, e-mail address validation is a trail of tears.

I am looking for a way to validate an email address, not only syntax, but
also the mx record and such.

If possible, can someone give me suggestions on how this can be done?
