Charles,

This is a topic that has been touched on in the lists a few times recently. Charles, I am not picking on you here, just that your e-mail is the most recent on the topic :-)

I have to say that I think a lot of the comments are being extremely unfair to RPG programmers. I see very little difference between an RPG programmers willingness to invest in their career and the willingness of any other employee in any other job (not just programming) to invest in their careers.

Yes, there are people who expect their employer to pay for everything related to their job. And, I think, there in lies the rub. Some people have jobs, other people have careers.

Also, I think your analogy with hospital uniforms misses the mark. The hospital (employer) insists that employees have a uniform - I have no idea whether or not they make a financial contribution towards that uniform. I wonder how many employees in a hospital would be wearing a uniform if it were not a condition of their employment.

As you may have guessed, one of my pet peeves is that, at times, we beat down on RPG programmers in general as if they are different from everyone else. They aren't. Some are willing to invest in their careers (we have a number of people attending the current RPG & DB2 Summit who are taking vacation time and paying their own way), some expect their employers to make that investment. This is not unique to RPG programmers.

Florin,

I apologize if I came off sounding too judgmental...

But call it a pet peeve of my that most RPG programmers seem to expect
tools and their own careers to be handed to them on a silver platter.

Many professions have "must-have" expenses associated with them. The
uniform required by the hospital my wife works at for instance. IMO,
a subscription to System i Network is a "must-have".

It seems to me that most non-RPG developers are willing to spend there
own time and money getting ahead. Perhaps it's an age thing; as many
RPG programmers started back when companies did tend to hand them what
they needed on a silver platter. But things have changed.

Alan,

I would like to thank you for your message and your understanding. I don't say I am in the same situation as your friend (I strongly hope he will soon see the light from the end of the tunnel) but I probably have some other challenges I have to face to.

For the others: please do not be so judgmental, because life could be so different from person to person (as Alan pointed out); I strongly agree it is a very good thing to invest in your career, I never disagreed with that, but unfortunately sometime you have to wait for the right time...

Thank you

Lets be careful here guys
I don't know Florins status, but a friend of mine has just found work after
almost 2 years of being out of work
At the moment, he is battling to save his house from going into
foreclosure, so as far as he is concerned $1 a year is definitely out of
the question never mind $149

If your company can't afford $149/yr (?)....you better make sure your
resume is up to date...

Heck, I pay my out of my own pocket...it's easier than dealing with
the red tape and it means the hard copies are mine to take with me if
I leave. If there's more than one subscriber from the same company,
it only costs $79/yr(?).

If you're not willing to put out anything to help your own
career....don't come crying when you get let go...

Just my opinion....

Thanks, Alan

It appears to be exactly what I am looking for; unfortunately, to
download this command requires a ProVip subscription and this is not an
option for my company. Probably someone knows a "free way" to accomplish
this...

Hi Florin
there is a command called RMVJLMSG that I have downloaded and now use
extensively to remove whatever message is wanted to be removed (in my
case
CPF5020)
However, it only seems to be available from systemiNetwork
The author is named Rory Hewitt

Hello,

I have this interactive program processing a display file with a
subfile; the user enters values in the input fields (both, Control and
Subfile records). When the values are wrong, the program issues error
messages (in a subfile message record), using QMHSNDPM API, which are
shown the next time when the file is displayed. The problem is that the
system issues, also, messages, like "Subfile Record not found" followed
by a "C" (for Cancel) and the user sees this messages, too.

My question is how could I get rid of these system messages, so the user
sees only error messages directly related to the values he enters?

(Hopefully I was clear enough with my explanation...)

Thank you
