I don't know if these previous posts help. They explain how SQL finds
functions, and they refer to PTF SI34794 on V5R4.

SQL tends to consider character strings as VARCHAR, so when you search
the stored proc catalog, it's looking for a
procedure definition that supports the VARCHAR type.
