If a variable appears on an O spec, the compiler assumes that the variable is used. It _could_ remember that it had only generated that particular =O spec just in case it was needed later, and only keep that field if the record actually got output or updated, but it doesn't ...

The 6.1 change to eliminate unused variables from the program didn't involve any changes in how the compiler actually determines that a variable is unused.
