One of our business partners told me that there is a local company (which shall remain nameless for these archives) that still runs a multi-store chain on a System/36. The software, while obviously legacy, works for them, and, thus, they see no reason to move to a System i. I suggested that, when hardware maintenance becomes more expensive than an upgrade or disappears altogether, they might move. But, honestly, it is (or should be) a business decision.

Some things, though, are not. Moving from RPG II to IV (without a tool) is a tough nut to crack; moving from III is not. Besides, IV is more fun. Even if one starts (like I did) by just writing RPG II/III-like programs in a new syntax, one can then extend that by incremental steps. I like learning/using new things. Which is why I subscribe to this list, Scott's newsletter, buy books (with my own money) on new (to me) topics, etc. Like is too short to be bored.
