Not surprising, really. People who have to learn a language in school are usually better grammatically than native speakers. An ex-girlfriend (una gringa) is fluent in both Spanish and Russian (what a combination), but she refused to engage in conversations with native Spanish speakers (we lived in New Mexico) unless necessary; she said she had a hard time understanding the idioms and other slang as she learned Castilian Spanish in college.
