Then, when RPGIV came, we kept the 6 character field names but the prefix A was used for input and output. If the parameter name began with a vowel, the suffix is An. Nobody knows why.

Likely reason is copying from an OO practice. Arguments are indefinite articles but variables used are definite articles (recall your Grammar lessons). Frequently seen with optional parameters. Thus:

D getDayOfWeek PR 5I 0
D aDate D DATFMT(*ISO) CONST OPTIONS(*NOPASS)

D getDayOfWeek PI 5I 0
D aDate D DATFMT(*ISO) CONST OPTIONS(*NOPASS)

D theDate S D DATFMT(*ISO)
D theDayNumber S 5I 0

C IF ( %PARMS >= 1 )
C EVAL theDate = aDate
C ELSE
C EVAL theDate = getDate()
*
* determine the day of the week for theDate
*
C RETURN theDayNumber

As for the rest of your append ... I'll just hold my tongue.

Simon Coulter.
