The GNU Utilities do have gawk - would that be useful? I've not use either sed or any flavor or awk, so this is just a SAG.

Did this post start out with having a problem with the QShell version of sed? I forget!

OK - home now

issue. I'll be more able to play with this when I arrive home. First
thing
I will try is the GNU binaries for sed et al. If you want to shortcut
this
(I have about 90 minute commute) you can find those for installation

The best way to save face is to keep the lower part full

Upon closer read of the prior IBM link, I see that sed is not in that
gnu-utilities link. I've found sed for AIX but it's an RPM. It's also part
of AIX Toolbox, but that's another RPM.<sigh> This will take longer than
I'd hope.

This is the end-result I hope to achieve, and the actual output from a linux
system at my home:

dennis@obi-wan:~$ echo abc | sed 's/a/a\r\n/'
a
bc
