Sorry, I posted a bit hastily.

I had described my based DS and put INZ values on the subfiles.

On the DS actually used, (likeds basedDS) I used INZ ( *LIKEDS ).

This won't compile as i cannot use INZ on the DS based on a pointer.

If by initialise you mean CLEAR the subfields, you can use
the CLEAR keyword, as in CLEAR *ALL myDS.
