There is no READ() function unless you've rolled your own.

There is. It is identified in the EXTPROC on the prototype, and it
represents the system API for reading from a file on the IFS.

On a DOU, the condition is evaluated at the ENDDO. On a DOW, the
condition is evaluated ON the DOW. It has nothing to do with READ. The
READ opcode doesn't return anything. I positions the file pointer to
the next record, and loads the internal memory with the data from the
record. If it's the last record in the file, %EOF will return *on ('1').

Yes, this has all been worked out, a couple of days ago.
