There is no READ() function unless you've rolled your own.

On a DOU, the condition is evaluated at the ENDDO. On a DOW, the condition is evaluated ON the DOW. It has nothing to do with READ. The READ opcode doesn't return anything. I positions the file pointer to the next record, and loads the internal memory with the data from the record. If it's the last record in the file, %EOF will return *on ('1').
