iSeries Access v5r4 works to a large extend even on v4r2, though file transfer does not.

For the archives: The reverse is, also, true. We have V5R4 of IBM i, but I (and a few others) have the V6R1 refresh of Client Access. Without the O/S upgrade there are obviously (though I don't know what) some things that System i Navigator (they did change the name) cannot do or I cannot see. Now whether or not this would work if the O/S was, say, V4R4 or even V5R3, I don't know.

the old version will still work fine but as a rule of thumb i prefer
keeping the software updated for emulation as well. right now we have a
mix of PCs running the v5r3 client and some running the most current. our
network folks don't see the upgrade as a priority but are upgrading as
they have time to.

We are shortly moving to a new machine V6R1 from our old machine V5R3.
Will the Client Access we are currently using on our workstations still
work ok with the new machine? I am told by our BP that it will but I
remember the last time we did this from an AS400 to an I520 about 5
years ago, we had to go around to each workstation and upgrade the
client access.

Is there any advantage to using the newer version which comes with the
V6R1 software?
