'L' is not a valid edit code and you can not use a variable.
From the help text for %EDITC:
Float expressions are not allowed in the first parameter (you can use
%DEC to convert a float to an editable format).
In the second parameter, the edit code is specified as a character
constant; supported edit codes are: 'A' - 'D', 'J' - 'Q', 'X' - 'Z', '1'
- '9'.
The constant can be a literal, named constant or an expression whose
value can be determined at compile time.
$ecd should be defined with one of the above valid edit codes.
For example:
D $Alpha S 10A
D Three C '3'
/Free
Alpha = %EditC(Number:Three);
/End-Free

hey all,
is there a way to use %editc using a variable as the actual code?
for instance:
D $ecd S 1a
D $alpha S 10
$ecd = 'L'
alpha = %editc(number:$ecd)
when I try this, I get a compile error:
The second parameter $ECD for %EDITC is not a character constant of
length 1.
seems like a no brainer to me, but is it really possible this isn't
allowed?
