You definitely don't want to create so many Java strings like that in RPG.
Each time you create a new string or concatenate a string you are creating a
new object. Garbage collection does not happen in RPG programs
automatically. You have to run some native JNI stuff to let the JVM know you
are done with the objects.

I would personally just use a varying field in RPG then create the Java
string at the end when you need it. If that is not an option I would look at
StringBuilder if you are at Java 5 or higher or StringBuffer if you are at a
Java release before Java 5.

I have an RPG pgm where I'm creating a lot of strings and concatenating

I'm looking to see if there is a more efficient way to do it. Currently
I'm
creating a string, then trimming the string, creating and trimming a second
string, then concatenating:

string1 = newString(RPGvar1);
string1 = trimString(string1);
string2 = newString(RPGvar2);
string2 = trimString(string2);
string3 = concat(string1:string2);

I think that's 5 String() objects that gets created. Is there a way to
create a string with out needing to trim it?

Thanks!
