The article referenced below directly addresses the above question that you raised on Midrange-L about how to handle XML documents that exceeded RPG's size limits. I assume from your question that you are on V5R4 as many of the limits are significantly raised in 6.1 - but regardless you need to use %Handler when dealing with large documents.
