I am trying to modify a current module procedure so that it will call an
external program which returns a data structure.

However the compiler is complaining about several issues.

is it even possible to have a prototype defined within a procedure in a
module or am I barking up the wrong tree.

I have defined prototypes within procedures, when there was little
possibility that the prototype would be needed elsewhere within the
module. That usually means helper methods, or external calls. I've not
had any problems with doing so. What kind of errors are you seeing.
