That did it: by replacing the hardcoded maximum possible length for this particular flavor of record with the length returned in AFLEN (duh!), the problem seems to be solved.

It seems like every time I'm asked to make this particular trigger do one more thing (what it does is script-driven!), I expect it to finally stop giving acceptable response times, and yet it seems generally fine. Remarkable what you can do with triggers.
