You've lost me. When you say there's a lot of code out there in fixed format that doesn't have a C in column 6 - are you referring to other specs, like D- and F-specs? Or are you referring to column 7 with its /?

Ok, so Pos 6 = ' ', and Pos 7 = ' ', and the line isn't blank, then it's a free format C-spec?

a pre compiler could do this. If the market wanted the feature a 3rd
