You can do this:

D forever c '1'

dow forever;
...
enddo;

but you cannot do this:

D forever c *ON

dow forever;
...
enddo;

I suspect that's what you were thinking -- you can't do the latter because the length of *ON varies depending the size of the field, and since "forever" isn't defined with a particular size, you can't use *ON here. But you can define it as '1' without any problems.
