Are they all skewed the same way, and book sales (or whatever) only
shows growth and not usage?

By "growth", do you mean an increase in usage? Or do you mean that the language itself is changing ... leading to a need for new books?

About 7 years ago VB .Net was release, which represented a major paradigm shift and caused a rift in the community that had deployed a bunch of VB 6.0 based applications. It meant that VB programmer would not only have to essentially learn a new language, but also rewrite their existing ones.

Now, VB 10 is on the horizon, and there are some indications that it will be another major paradigm shift to Silverlight and Microsoft's new Dynamic Language Runtime (DLR). So there will be a need for more books, and another rewrite of applications.

I confess, I was on that merry-go-round a number of years ago, but decided to get off and become an ILE programmer.
