I realise that; maybe I should have explicitly stated it.

In this particular case it was about an interactive program that was
compiled for different named activation groups to avoid reopening files,
probably for performance reasons.

For standard interactive programs, I'd pretty much agree with you.

However, it's still a factor for any program that gets run repeatedly
, ie. in a loop, you definitely don't want to be opening the files
each time.

A trigger program is a great example of this.

What is the problem with reopening files? Performance? If so, have you
actually tried it? Keeping files open for performance reasons might have
had its use in the days of the S/38 and possibly early AS/400's, but

these

days it is more trouble than it's worth.
