We only had setup some journaling after starting to use Java and .NET to access the db.

Wow, really? I've never worked in a shop that used journaling, except
when using HA solution like Mimix... Never been able to sell management
on the virtues of commitment control, either.... Or primary / foreign
key constraints...

Perhaps its just Texas, but if I had to guess, I'd say your experience
with journaling is not typical.
