I wrote a nifty RPG cycle pgm using MR about 5 years ago.
Since then, I had to fix the program because of a bug.
Turns out it was moded a couple of times by people who had
no clue about the CYCLE. I was such an abortion that I
rewrote it, this time without the CYCLE so at least it was
understandable to non-Cyclers. But I had to do 2 passes over
the file and 2 reports with more complex code than the CYCLE
used.
Matching Records is effectively a 'FULL OUTER JOIN', over
multiple files, but you get your records one at a time and a couple
of FLAGS MR Ln to indicate the state of the join for that record.
As usual a tool is only as good as its user.
Dont hammer nails with a screwdriver.

The SQL (embedded) I use V5R4 has no FULL OUTER join
but you can simulate it and heaven help you if you need to join
more than 3 files, and when I need FULL OUTER JOIN on many
files I usually construct a set of work files.

It was much simpler with the CYCLE.
