That's pretty much the way that I do it. However, part of Booth's requirement was to sort ascending OR descending. SORTA sorts the array based upon the array's definition in the D-specs. So it would seem that, as records are retrieved from the table, they would have to be loaded into two arrays, and then sort the one that means the ASC/DSC criteria and load the subfile from there. Loading the second array shouldn't have a noticeable effect on response time.

Subject: Re: Sorting arrays

I would use a DS array, this way I can sort by any of the subfields

D Display_Scrn DS Qualified Inz
D Scrn_Field Dim(200)
D President 25 Overlay(Scrn_Field:1)
D Color 10 Overlay(Scrn_Field:*Next)
D Number 6 Overlay(Scrn_Field:*Next)
D Ocean 20 Overlay(Scrn_Field:*Next)
D Contient 25 Overlay(Scrn_Field:*Next)

Keep count of how many Elements have been populated.

Sort by president -
SortA %SubArr(Scrn_Field.President:1 :Number_of_Elements);

Sort by Color -
SortA %SubArr(Scrn_Field.Color:1 :Number_of_Elements);

Sort by Number -
SortA %SubArr(Scrn_Field.Number:1 :Number_of_Elements);

Sort by Ocean -
SortA %SubArr(Scrn_Field.Ocean:1 :Number_of_Elements);

Sort by Contient -
SortA %SubArr(Scrn_Field.Contient:1 :Number_of_Elements);

Repopulate your screen and display
