I've done that with impact printers (dot matrix, band, etc.), but I've never been able to get to work with lasers, inkjets, and such.

Generally, in my experience, if you output the same data in the same
place on the same line twice, it acts like HIGHLIGHT. So, he could have
as many named EXCEPT lines as he likes, and do it all in the C-Specs,
using no indicators whatsoever?

It seems to me that perhaps a better (or at least different) way of
building the line might be preferable. Why not build it in (say) a DS
with overlapping fields where needed. Couldn't be any more confusing
than any print line that needs more than 100 indicators!
