You could use a data queue attached to the display file

You WRITE the display file record and then use QRCVDTAQ to read the data queue, with a timeout value of 5 minutes If it comes back with *DSPF then the user entered something and you READ the display file record. If the data queue comes back empty then it has timed out.

Subject
Returning control to a program from a dspf without user input

A co-worker is writing a program in which he wants to display a screen
with all output fields for a few seconds and then return control to the
program without the user taking any action. When return controls to the
program he wants to immediately display a window over the initially
displayed screen.

Something like

Exfmt Screen1 ;
//no user input
//wait about five seconds
Exfmt Screen2 ;

I've looked through the dspf keywords and nothing is jumping out at me.
Any suggests on how to accomplish this?
