This way if the file is ever expanded it will
not break the applications that are using the SP down the road.

Why would additional columns break the consumers of the SP? A waste of
bandwidth? Sure. But unless you're retrieving the columns by ordinal I
don't see how the additional columns would cause the app to break.

BTW, I'm not disagreeing w/the idea (specifying the columns, not using
*) and I do specify the columns when I'm writing sql statements by hand
(rare these days) but I do it from a documentation and maintenance point
of view, not from a breakage point of view. If I'm selecting only
OrderNumber, OrderDate and OrderTotal it's obvious that my application
doesn't care about OrderStatus or OrderTax.
